Boys Basketball: Dexter holds off Lincoln for first win of the season

Welcome to the win column!

The Dexter boys’ basketball team won its first game of the young season on Friday night with an impressive 57-52 win on the road over a tough Lincoln team. It was a good test with a great result for the Dreadnaughts.

“I thought we played well from start to finish,” said Dexter Coach Jason Rushton. “Yes, things got a little sloppy down the stretch that we need to clean up, but we stayed together, kept our heads and came out with the win which is what we want to have with our young group.”

Dexter led 11-10 after the first quarter and 25-20 at halftime. Lincoln outscored Dexter 14-10 in the third quarter to make it a one point game heading into the final quarter. The Dreads outscored the Railsplitters 22-18 in the final period.

Evan Haroldson had a huge night for Dexter. He not only led all scorers with 17 points but had eight rebounds and four steals. He also made all 12 free-throw attempts including eight in the fourth quarter.

Reeves Taylor added 11 points and six rebounds after being out the last couple of days being sick. Freshman Jack DeMerell, who has been coming around nicely for the Dreadnaughts in his first varsity season, added nine points with three assists off the bench.

Garrett Sharp got hot early and added nine points. Xavier Blumberg added seven assists and was a great leader on the floor all night. “He also leads the charge to clean up both benches after every game to tell you the type of guys we have with this group,” says Rushton.

Dexter heads into a little bit of a break before heading to Ferndale HS for the Motor City Roundball Classic on Dec. 29 to take on a tough Flint Carman Ainsworth team.
