Girls Basketball: Dreadnaughts roll into postseason with victory over rival Chelsea

Rivalry games are meant to be close – and they usually don’t disappoint.

The Dexter girls’ basketball team crossed the border on Friday night for a showdown with rival Chelsea as both teams prepare for the upcoming District tournament which begins this coming week.

Dexter took an 11-8 lead after the first quarter and led 20-17 at halftime. Both offenses switched gears in the third quarter as Dexter scored 21 points to Chelsea’s 16. The difference was nine points heading into the fourth quarter and the Dreadnaughts were not going to leave anything to chance as they cranked up the intensity on the defensive end.

Dexter outscored Chelsea 11-3 in the final quarter to take a 52-36 win. It was a nice way to end the regular season and a nice confidence boost heading into the postseason.

The Dreadnaughts had a balanced scoring attack with five players scoring seven or more points. Freshman Alena Blumberg made 5 of 9 field goals to lead the scoring with 13 points. Senior Maddie Valentine hit a couple of triples and finished with 12 points.

Senior Brianna Rodriguez (seven steals), Sydney Pnacek (six rebounds) and Chloe Perry (three assists) each had seven points for Dexter. Maggie Lewis had four points and five rebounds.
