Girls Basketball: Dreadnaughts open SEC season with victory over Tecumseh

The Dexter girls’ basketball team is off to a consistent start to the new season. The Dreadnaughts are consistently scoring double digits in each quarter and consistently getting contributions from several different players. Oh, and they are consistently putting games in the win column.

Dexter didn’t exactly run host Tecumseh out of the gym on Tuesday night, but they did enough to knock off the Indians 46-34 in an SEC White Division season opener.

The Dreadnaughts started strong with a 15-9 first-quarter lead. They led 25-19 at halftime and 33-24 after three quarters. The visitors outscored the Indians 13-10 in the final quarter to lock down the win.

The Dreadnaughts had five players score six or more points as they continue to spread the wealth – and the ball. Junior Alayna Babut scored in every quarter and finished with a team-high 10 points. Senior center Kylie Cabana had eight points for the Dreads. And junior Olivia Mellifont, sophomore Sydney Pnacek and sophomore Maddi Valentine all scored six points apiece in the win.

The Dreads will play Adrian at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The Dexter boys’ team will play the Maples at 7 p.m. Both games are at Adrian.
