Swimming: Dreadnaughts cruise to 22nd straight SEC White Division title

Twenty-two and counting!

The Dexter girls’ swimming and diving team won its incredible 22nd consecutive SEC White Division Championship this past weekend after a dominating performance at the league meet.

From the opening splash to the final touch of the wall, the Dreadnaughts were in control of the league meet hosted by Dexter. The Dreadnaughts finished with 520 points, well ahead of second-place Chelsea (329). Tecumseh was third (242), Jackson fourth (214), Pinckney fifth (138), Lincoln sixth (114), Adrian seventh (90) and Ypsilanti eighth (64).

The many highlights for the Dreadnaughts included new state cuts this weekend for Ella Krahn (500 free), Jackie Wyka (100 back), Maddi Matos (100 back) and Lauren Witte (100 fly).

Dexter started off taking second to Tecumseh in the medley relay. The team of Lauren Witte, Zoe Michos, Sam Durrant and Emma Sortor touched in 1:53.70.

The Dreadnaughts went one-two in the 200 free with junior Charlotte Schultz first in 1:55.51 and junior Hailee Waters second in 1:58.31. Ella Krahn was fourth (2:03.75) and Elizabeth Merz fifth (2:04.05) for the Dreads.

In the 200 IM, Dexter’s Zoe Michos was third (2:18.71) and Sortor was fourth (2:18.75). Maddi Matos was sixth in 2:20.58.

In the 50 free, Holly Durand was fourth (25.54) and Marea Balcom was sixth (26.20) for Dexter.

As expected, Dexter dominated the diving with their trio of youngsters at the top. Freshman Lily Witte was first with 462 points. Freshman Vivian Kinnard was second with 403.95 points and sophomore Elysa Grossman was third with 398.50 points.

The Dreadnaughts had three swimmers in the top five in the 100 butterfly. Junior Lauren Witte was second (1:01.19), Sortor was fourth (1:02.63) and Theresa Rutz was fifth (1:03.60).


In the 100 free, Merz was third (55.66), Durand fourth (55.81) and Durrant sixth (56.75).

The Dreadnaughts took the top two spots in the 500 free with Waters touching first in 5:19.39 and Krahn taking second in 5:30.13. Laura Walton was sixth (5:48.64).

The Dexter foursome of Durand, Waters, Durrant and Schultz took first in the 200 free relay in 1:40.61.

Dexter dominated the backstroke. Schultz was first in 58.81 with Lauren Witte in third (1:01.72), Jackie Wyka in fourth (1:02.26) and Maddi Matos in fifth (1:03.64).

In the breaststroke, Zoe Michos was fourth (1:13.66) and Natalie Koenn was fifth (1:15.41).

The Dreadnaughts ended the meet by winning the 400 free relay. The team of Durand, Merz, Waters and Schultz touched first in 3:38.93.

The D2 State Finals are Nov. 23 at Oakland University.
