Golf: Skyline wins SEC tournament; Dexter ties for fourth

The Skyline varsity golf team secured a perfect SEC Conference season on Tuesday by winning the SEC Conference tournament at Barton Hills Country Club. Following their 13-0 match record, the Eagles fired a team score of 305 to win in walk-off fashion.

Pioneer and Chelsea were a distant second with 321 team scores. Dexter and Saline both fired a 328 to tie for fifth followed by Jackson (341), Tecumseh (342) and Huron (345) in the 14-team field.

Dexter’s Jack Kolka tied for sixth overall on the SEC scorecard with an impressive 79. The Dreadnaughts had a consistent day with all five players shooting below 90. Jack Evans (81), Matt Keogh (84), Dom Sortor (84), Joey Faceeassi (86) and Kyle Knapp (89) all had solid rounds for Dexter.

Skyline had five players in the top 10 including three in the top four of the SEC scorecard. Vimal Alokam fired a tournament-best 74 to take medalist honors. Skyline’s Shaunak Bhagat tied with Pioneer’s Xavier Lee for second place with a 75. Skyline’s Cam Cowland was fourth with a 76.

Skyline’s Joe Trudeau and Luke Richard tied for 10th with 80s. Ryan Schmunk shot a 90 to finish 43rd for the Eagles.

Pioneer’s Colin Flanders fired a 77 to finish fifth overall. Also for Pioneer, Edward Shen shot an 83, Junah Whitelocke fired an 86, Davis DeRosia shot an 88 and Neal Sinha shot a 93.

Huron was led by Julius Stuhec who fired an 82. Other top scorers for the River Rats were Will Chung (84), Brendan Baidel (89) and Carl Innes and Devon Caris (both shot a 91).

Skyline will host the Region 6 Regional on May 29 at Lake Forest Golf Club. Below is the Regional field. The state finals are June 7-8 at The Fortress in Frankenmuth.
