Softball: Dexter comes up a run short in late-inning loss to Milan

The Dexter softball team travelled down the road to Chelsea on Thursday for the annual Chelsea Softball Quad and the Dreadnaughts faced a couple of strong programs in Eaton Rapids and Milan.

The day didn’t start off very well for the Dreads who fell 12-0 to Eaton Rapids. Dexter fell behind 4-0 after the first inning and 11-0 after two innings. Eaton Rapids had 11 hits to two for the Dreads, who also committed four errors.

Paige Sayler and Emma Sorter had Dexter’s hits.

The Dreads played Milan in the second game and lost a heartbreaker in the seventh inning after rallying to tie the game in the sixth. Dexter again was hurt on defense with five errors.

The Big Reds took a not-so-big 2-0 lead in the second inning. Dexter scored in the fourth but Milan got the run back in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, the Dreadnaughts tied the game with a pair of runs. The Big Reds scored a big run in the seventh and held on for the 4-3 win. Milan had seven hits; Dexter had five.

Stephanie McClendon (two innings), Sayler (two innings) and Sam Sutton (three innings) all pitched well for the Dreadnaughts. They allowed just seven hits and one earned run while striking out eight and walking just two.

Sutton had two hits including a double and drove in three runs with one walk. Kylee Niswonger was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Emily Lance had a hit and scored a run.

Dexter hosts Adrian on Monday starting at 4 p.m.
