Softball: Dexter answer’s Pioneer rally with 7-4 victory in SEC crossover

The Dexter softball team built a 3-0 lead over visiting Pioneer on Wednesday in the first inning and led 4-2 after four. The Pioneers turned up the offense in the fifth to tie the game but Dexter answered the way good teams do – by scoring in the bottom of the inning.

The Dreadnaughts added two more runs in the sixth and knocked off a strong Pioneer team 7-4 in an SEC crossover game. Dexter had 12 hits in the game while the Pioneers recorded five hits. Each team made an error.

Sam Sutton was credited with the victory for Dexter. She went 4.2 innings and didn’t allow a hit. She had six strikeouts with four walks. Brenna Cassidy threw two and a third innings in relief out of the bullpen and gave up four hits, three earned runs with three strikeouts and two walks.

Lillie Robeson hit a home run in the sixth inning for the Dreadnaughts. Kylee Niswonger led off with three hits for the Dreads at the top of the order. Livvy Mellifont, from the three hole, had two hits, scored two runs with an RBI and a walk. Camryn Chase had two hits including a double and two RBI.

Brenna Cassidy and Taylor Wilson each had a double for Dexter.

Mimi Maixner took the loss for Pioneer. The senior went six innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and striking out five. Only four of the runs were earned.

Maixner led the Pioneer offense with two hits in three at bats. She also had a run scored and RBI. Franny Schulenberg and Ceci Maixner each had a double for the Pioneers.

Pioneer plays at the Grand Ledge Tournament on Saturday.
