Rep. Walberg Leads Bipartisan Effort Reintroducing “Great Lakes Restoration Semipostal Stamp Act”

Washington DC – In recognition of Great Lakes Week, U.S. Representatives Tim Walberg (MI-07) with support from Tim Ryan (OH-13) have reintroduced a bipartisan bill to strengthen efforts to protect the Great Lakes ecosystem.

H.R. Bill 1440, Great Lakes Restoration Semipostal Stamp Act, would create a special postage stamp designed to raise money to support the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). Additional original co-sponsors include: Reps. Debbie Dingell (MI-12), Bill Huizenga (MI-02), Dan Kildee (MI-05), Bob Latta (OH-05), Paul Mitchell (MI-10), John Moolenaar (MI-04), and Elissa Slotkin (MI-08).

“Everything from tourism, recreation, and drinking water all depend on a healthy Great Lakes ecosystem,” said Congressman Walberg. “As we approach the events of Great Lakes Week, it is an opportunity to spotlight the Great Lakes’ many economic and environmental benefits and renew our efforts to safeguard them for generations to come. Our bipartisan legislation is another way we can expand the critical cleanup work being done under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.”

“The Great Lakes are our region’s most precious resource. It’s critical we do everything in our power, no matter how big or small, to safeguard the long-term health and well-being of the world’s largest source of fresh water,” said Congressman Ryan. “Lake Erie alone supports more than 117,000 full time jobs and provides clean drinking water to 3 million Ohioans. I am happy to join this effort to provide the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative with more funds to carry out its important mission.”

The Great Lakes Restoration Semipostal Stamp Act directs the United States Postal Service to issue a semipostal stamp with Great Lakes artwork. Citizens would then have the choice of purchasing the stamps at a price slightly above that of first-class postage, with the difference being transferred to support the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). The legislation comes at no additional cost to taxpayers.
