Michigan State Police Expand Angel Program to All 30 Posts

For anyone in the Dexter area struggling with opioid addiction, help is just minutes away.

The Michigan State Police have expanded a program to help people struggling with opioid addiction to all 30 of its posts. In the Angel Program, people can walk into any post during regular business hours and seek help without fear of any investigation or arrest.

Upon acceptance into the program, the individual is assessed and placed in a drug treatment program where volunteers known as “angels” provide support, encouragement and transportation for the duration of the process.

Opioids can be highly addictive and their use is increasing in the United States with abuse becoming a growing concern. The U.S. has about 5% of the world’s population but it now consumes about 80% of the global supply of prescription opioids.

Here in Michigan, opioid deaths surpassed automobile fatalities in 2016. Including heroin, 1,989 people died from opioid overdoses compared to 1,064 killed in car accidents.

“The opioid epidemic is real and we all need to do our part to stop it,” said MSP Director Colonel Kriste Etue. “More people in Michigan die from drug overdoses than car crashes, and the Angel Program is one way the Michigan State Police is helping to reduce drug demand and serve those struggling with this deadly addiction.

Last year Michigan health-care providers wrote 11 million prescriptions for opioids which is enough to provide every Michigan resident with his or her own bottle of narcotics, according to state data. In 2009, 8 million prescriptions were written.

The Angel Program is a pre-arrest diversion program for those struggling with drug addiction. To learn more about the MSP Angel Program, visit www.michigan.gov/AngelProgram.
