At the November 30 breakfast meeting of The Dexter Rotary Club, Joe Evans reported that Rotary’s STRIVE students and mentors enjoyed a Thanksgiving meal prepared by Dexter’s Alt Ed instructors and administrators.
The STRIVE mentorship program is working well with all students involved planning on continuing their education at Washtenaw Community College for the winter semester. Rotary President Dr. Julie Schumaker says, “The success of this program is due to the leadership of Joe Evans and the dedicated service of John McGinnis, Cindy Glahn, Shelley Petry, Fred Schmid, Fred Fahrner and Stephanie Evans who are serving as mentors.”
Joe Evans talks about the Thanksgiving Meal and STRIVE:
“On the Tuesday the 21st of November, the Rotary Club of Dexter teamed up with the Dexter High School (DHS) Alternative Education (Alt Ed) staff to host a splendid traditional Thanksgiving meal for both the Alt Ed students as well as for five former Alt Ed students who are now enrolled at WCC and participate in the Dexter Rotary STRIVE program (Students Taking a Renewed Interest in the Value of Education).
“This meal was a unique opportunity for all of the people (students, teachers, staff and mentors) involved in the Alt Ed and STRIVE programs to join together and give thanks for our many blessings. The Alt Ed faculty and DHS administration staff provided all of the customary harvest fare side dishes from mashed potatoes, stuffing and casseroles to pumpkin pie while the Dexter Rotary Club provided the turkey which was fried in peanut oil just outside of the Copeland building.
“The Dexter Rotary STRIVE project is in its first year of operation and was designed to augment the DHS Alt Ed program by providing engaged mentorship, scholarship opportunities, life-skill coaching, and professional development that continues through high school and into either a community college education or vocational training for high-risk high school students. The STRIVE program currently has five former DHS students enrolled at Washtenaw Community College who are just now finishing their first semester of college courses.
