Dexter Rotary, Jets Pizza team up for End Polio Now campaign

The Dexter Rotary and Rotary Club of Saline have partnered with Jets Pizza as part of Rotary International’s End Polio Now campaign.

The fifth annual World Polio Day event, co-hosted with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will stream live on Oct. 24 from Gates Foundation headquarters in Seattle, Washington to bring together more than 50,000 viewers around the world.
Global health experts and celebrities will help share Rotary’s progress on the road to polio eradication.

Rotary clubs around the world are doing their own fund-raisers including Dexter and Saline. Jets Pizza (in Dexter on Dexter-Ann Arbor Road and the Saline location on Michigan Avenue) will donate 20 percent of all sales on Tuesday, Oct. 24 to the campaign to forever purge polio.

The more pizza people buy, the bigger the donation. So make this Tuesday pizza day.

Rotary is an international community that brings together leaders who step up to take on the world’s toughest challenges, locally and globally. The eradication of polio is one of our longest standing and most significant efforts.

Along with their partners, Rotary International has helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. They have reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide and they won’t stop until they end the disease for good.
Most know it as poliovirus, the virus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis.

Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine.

To end polio, we must stop transmission of the virus in the three countries where it remains endemic: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. We must also keep all other countries polio-free until we’re certain it won’t resurface. Up to 60 high-risk countries still operate large-scale immunization campaigns to protect children against polio.
