Dexter’s Swim Coach McHugh Chosen Coach of the Year

The Michigan High School Athletic Coaches Association (MHSCA) , the professional organization of school coaches and athletic directors, has chosen Dexter Boys Varsity Swim Coach Michael McHugh as their Coach of the Year. The award will be presented at MHSCA’s Winter Awards Luncheon, Nov 12, in Lansing.

Coach McHugh successfully led Dexter’s Boys Varsity Swim Team to their second consecutive state championship in March this year. It’s been a year of notable accomplishments for Coach. Just a month earlier, Dexter beat Chelsea to give Coach McHugh his 100th win.

This year’s award, announced in August, is the second time he has been chosen Coach of the Year since becoming head coach eleven years ago. This was also his third state championship (2012, 2016, 2017) during his tenure.

There is no secret to the success of Dexter’s Varsity Swim Program. It is old fashioned hard work:

  • 1 hour 30 minutes in the pool before school Mon, Wed, Fri
  • 2 hours 30 minutes in the pool after school Mon-Fri
  • Weights and exercise before school Tue & Thu
  • 2 hours in the pool Saturday if there is no meet
  • Logging 110 miles in the pool over the two week holiday break

Coach McHugh and his team were recognized for their accomplishments by Dexter’s Board of Education last Spring at their monthly meeting at which time he noted, “No other team works harder than us. These guys are in the pool everyday and give up their vacation. It takes a special person to be that dedicated.”

The team buys into Coach McHugh’s arduous training and the results speak for themselves not just in seasonal wins, but also in the lifelong effect. Board President Michael Wendorf, a swimmer himself, noted that the real “win” in their achievements was strength of character the swimmers had developed which they would carry with them the rest of their lives.

The MHSCA selection of Coach McHugh is recognition of him, his team, their school and community.  Selections for the award are determined by a peer group of coaches and are based upon the team’s performance over the years and their contribution to the sport, school and community.

It is indeed a high honor to have been selected as Michigan High School Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the year in the sport Boys Swimming from the entire State of Michigan nominees.

So congratulations Coach McHugh and thank you once again, and thanks to all the team, for all your sacrifice and hard work.
