July Offers a Month Full of Fun at Dexter District Library

July is our busiest month at the Library, with fun events and activities for all ages. It’s not too late to sign up for the Summer Reading Program. All participants will receive weekly prizes or incentives to keep reading throughout the summer.

Drop-In Summer Story Times are held throughout July on Mondays and Thursdays at 11:00 am. This program is geared for ages 6 and under but everyone is welcome to attend one or both sessions. Story Times include books, music, movement, flannel board stories and more to encourage the love of reading in young children. Daycare centers may attend Summer Story Times but are asked to arrive early.

On Wednesday, July 5 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, the Library will host our yearly Ice Cream Social at Farmers Market. Show your Dexter District Library card and receive a free ice cream cone or cup from the Coffee House Creamery ice cream wagon.

Stop by for DIY Crafts & Anime for Teens on Thursday, July 6 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Teens in Grades 6 through 12 are invited to create with a variety of DIY projects while anime episodes play on the big screen. Pizza lunch will be served, registration is required, called 734-426-4477 to register.

Let’s Build a Better World – with music. Grab your family and friends and get in the groove with Lori Fithian for a “Drummunity” circle on Friday, July 7 at 11:00 am. Lori will bring the drums and you get to play them. Lori lives right here in Dexter, and has been leading drum circles and workshops since 1998. Her program has been a favorite at the Library. You won’t believe your ears when you participate in this high energy, 100% hands-on event for all ages.

This month, Lego Club will meet on July 11 at 4:00 pm. Kids ages four and up are invited to spend an afternoon making their own Lego creations while visiting with old friends and making new ones. Everyone is welcome – Legos will be provided by the Library.

Meet the Dreadbots – Dexter High School’s FIRST Robotics Team on Wednesday, July 12 at 11:00 am. Robotics teams create purpose-built robots each year, designed to play in highly competitive games. The robots operate autonomously as well as under the control of its student operators, who use game controllers to actuate about a dozen electric motors and pneumatic cylinders that power the robots during intense matches. Dreadbot team members have diverse and varied roles including programming, cheerleading, mechanical design, statistics, strategy, business planning, graphics and more. Kids ages 6 and up are invited to a 60 minute presentation of robotics demonstrations and hands-on participation. Registration is not required.

DIY Crafts & Movie returns on Thursday, July 13 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm for teens in grades 6 through 12. A variety of craft materials will be available for DIY projects, while a popular, newly released movie plays on the big screen. Pizza lunch will be provided, call 734-426-4477 to register.

On Friday, July 14 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm the Secretary of State Mobile Office will be in Dexter. Services offered by the Mobile Office include driver’s license renewal, instant titles, address changes, signing up for the Michigan Organ Donor Registry, obtaining license plates and tabs and much more. Residents can also ask questions about services. The Secretary of State Mobile Office will be located in the Library’s parking lot, near the main entrance.

Friday, July 14 at 11:00 am Acting Up Theatre Company returns with “Oh Brother Builders.” Billy Builder has done nothing his whole life but prepare, design and build things for his company. Buddy on the other hand is more of a bumbler than a builder. He spends most of his time folding blueprints into paper airplanes and catching Pokemon on the worksites. The Brothers are given a rush job by the pickiest man in town, Mr. Finicky. The pressure of the impossible deadline and the fact that Billy is serious and Buddy just messes around nearly destroys their brotherly relationship. Kids of all ages are invited to join us for an interactive show about building a better world through planning, perseverance and play. Then, at 1:00 pm teens are invited to attend the Acting Up Theatre Company Improv Workshop. This program takes teens into an Acting 1 class in the Library. Teens in Grades 6 through 12 are invited to enjoy an action-packed hour of fun while learning improve techniques. No experience is necessary, call 734-426-4477 to register.

On Tuesday, July 18 Naturalist Endeavors Presents “Portable Pond Ecology.” At 11:00 am kids in grades 1 through 3 will learn about the different kinds of ponds, the types of animals that live in the ponds and what makes each pond unique. Naturalist Randy Baker brings a variety of small pond creatures from multiple ponds. Kids in grade 4 through 7 may attend the 1:00 pm program. Registration is required beginning Monday, July 3.

Flying Aces Professional Frisbee Team comes to the Library on Friday, July 21 at 11:00 am. The Flying Aces have entertained audiences of all ages for over 34 years. They are experts in Frisbee golf, Frisbee dog acts, Ultimate Frisbee, skateboards, hacky sacks or any subject related to alternative sports. In fact, the Flying Aces Pro Frisbee Team is the only full-time pro Frisbee demo squad in the world. You can’t get much more unique than that. Kids will love the spectacular athletic skills displayed by the performers. The show ends with an audience participation contest. Recommended for ages 4 and up.

Stop by for Makerspace Monday on July 24 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Several creativity stations will be set up for kids in grades K through 12 to enjoy using a variety of building products such as Lincoln Logs, Legos, Construx, Hexabits and much more. Work alone or as a team.

Beginning July 3, kids in grades 4 through 12 can register a for Tie Dye Workshop, which will take place on Tuesday, July 25 at 10:00 am and again at 11:00 am. Meet at the Library for instructions and preparations, then head to Farmers Market to tie dye. Please bring one pre-washed, white cotton t-shirt. All other supplies will be provided. Wear old clothes or an apron as dye may stain clothing.

Movie & Popcorn for Kids returns on Friday, July 28 at 11:00 am. Enjoy a free bag of popcorn and a popular, newly release family movie on the big screen.

Beginning July 31, all kids and teens who have meet their reading goal may stop by the Library and receive a book bag full of prizes, snacks, coupons and school supplies and get entered into the Grand Prize Drawing, which will be held on held on Monday, August 14. There will be a Grand Prize Drawing for adults who have completed the Adult Summer Reading Program as well.
