Wrestling: Feldkamp pins down second at state finals

Dexter’s Will Feldkamp’s bid for a state championship came up a few points short but the senior still finished with one of the most impressive senior seasons in school history.

Feldkamp finished second on Saturday at the Individual Wrestling State Finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills. The Dreadnaughts sent four wrestlers to the Division 2 finals.

Feldkamp lost 7-2 in the championship match at 189 pounds to Warren-Lincoln’s Jelani Embree.

Feldkamp, who finished with a 54-1 record, opened the day with a pin of Dawson Romanosky of Muskegon. He then pinned Efrain Ortiz of Pontiac in the next round.

Feldkamp reached the final with a 13-10 decision over Dave Kruse of Lowell in the semifinals.

At 152 pounds, Kyle Burton pinned down an eighth-place finish with a strong showing after dropping his first match to Dustin Gross of Dearborn Heights Annapolis 14-3. Gross finished second overall.

Burton, a senior, bounced back with a 16-5 win in the next round and then won 5-4 to advance to the seventh-eighth match. Dren Bartrum (Greenville) defeated Burton on a 7-4 decision.

Burton finished fourth at regionals and ended his senior year with a 41-13 record.

Ryan Clements, who took second at regionals and brought his 42-7 record to Auburn Hills, went 1-2 on the day. He lost his opening match on a pin but bounced back with a pin of his own before falling 12-2 to Tecumseh’s Kellen Patton.

At 160 pounds, Adam Burton started his day off with an impressive 16-2 win over Chase Reaser of Hastings before falling in the second round. Burton then lost 9-4 to Chelsea’s Gus Reynolds, who landed sixth overall.
