Encore Musical Theatre presents ‘NOISES off!’

The Encore Musical Theatre Company is going through a rough time with its latest performance. Actors are forgetting lines. The production is a mess. And there are reports that the casts’ collective sanity is slowly unraveling.

And Director Tobin Hissong couldn’t be happier.

Hissong was thrilled when he was asked to direct “NOISES off!,” a comedy by Michael Frayn. Hissong, a longtime director and actor who is well known in acting circles near and far, calls “NOISES off!” one of the funniest farces ever written.

“It’s a very funny look at actors trying to put on a play,” he said. “It’s an English play that takes place in England so there is that element to it. It has a real Monty Python, Bennie Hill feel to it. It’s fast and furious.”

“NOISES off!” will run from Feb. 2-19 at The Encore Theatre in Dexter.

The play is a roller coaster, side-splitting look at theatre – inside and out – as a hapless troupe of actors attempt to mount the dreadful comedy Nothing On. Door slamming, missed cues, and romantic intrigue will have audiences roaring with laughter as the casts’ collective sanity slowly unravels.

Yet, the show must go on; despite the catastrophe being played out on stage and the vicious antics among the actors backstage. All-the-while, an ill-fated tray of sardines mysteriously appears and disappears.

“The show starts out with the actors rehearsing on the set the night before opening night,” Hissong said. “Nerves are frazzled. The second act is the action that happens backstage while the stage is in performance. The entire set turns around so not only do you see the action being performed on stage but you see what’s going on back stage as the show is going on.”

“During the third set, the stage is turned around again and by this point everyone hates each other. It is just hilarious.”

Hissong said they had auditions in September and had a number of people come in for the show. While the writing of any show is important, so is finding the right people to deliver the lines and create the perfect performance.

“We had to pick out the nine actors that would best fit the roles and we couldn’t be happier with the cast,” he said. “We have a full complement of incredibly talented actors and it’s a nice combination of professional actors and some of the best non-equity talent that there is in Michigan right now.”

Hissong said directing this play has been a lot of fun but also challenging.

“There is a play called Nothing On, which is the play the actors are preparing to put on and that play is still happening on the backside of the set during act two while all of this mayhem is happening on the front of the set,” he said. “And some of the stuff happening backstage carries on to the stage of the show. Directing two plays at the same time was incredibly difficult but fortunately I am blessed with a cast of nine actors who are adept at this type of humor as well as physical comedy.”
