Deputies Help Contain Dexter Hazmat

No one was injured when a 55 gallon drum of dimethyl carbonate was split open accidentally on Friday. The Washtenaw County Sheriff responded when it was hit by a fork lift while being unloaded at the Alpha Metal Finishing Company at 10:15 a.m., September 16.

The local deputies were joined by the Washtenaw County Hazmat Team, the Dexter Area Fire Department, a Helping Area Response Teams and Huron Valley Ambulance. The chemical, which is used as an ingredient in other chemicals, was cleaned up by that afternoon and did not make it to a drain.

According to a Sheriff spokesman, the loading dock was designed specifically to prevent a spill like that from spreading to the ecosystem. There were no injuries.

In other news, a 14-year-old was arrested for domestic violence in the 200 block of Orange Blossom Lane, Saturday, September 17. The minor was taken to the Washtenaw County Juvenile Detention Center after deputies showed up at 10:36 p.m. Charges have been submitted for review with the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

Several rolls of copper wire were stolen from a construction site in the 3900 block of Jackson Road sometime overnight on September 15. Construction workers reported it to the sheriff when they returned to work.

A deputy pulled over a car at the intersection of Burton and Jackson Roads for driving erratically in the early morning of September 17. An odor of marijuana came from the car window at 1:09 a.m. and the two occupants were ordered occupants out. The 18 year old Chelsea man was arrested on a bench warrant and a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia was also found in the car. An 18 year old Taylor man was let go. The marijuana is being tested at the state crime lab. The case has been submitted for review with the prosecutor, pending the test results.

A tenant in a house in the 3500 block of Central Street called 911 at 12:48 a.m., September 16, to report smelling marijuana from a neighboring apartment. The house has been divided into a number of apartment units. Deputies knocked on the neighbor’s door and the tenant turned over a personal amount of marijuana. This has been sent to the lab for analysis. Charges have been submitted for review with the prosecutor, pending results.
