Tennis preview: Dreads leaning on seniors for leadership

Robert Smothers begins his fifth season as head coach of the Dexter boys’ tennis team and he sees good things ahead for the Dreadnaughts for 2016. But like everything, there is a “but.”

“Our success this year will hinge on how our seniors perform,” said Smothers. “We have young talent that will contribute, but the leadership of our seniors will dictate how well we do this year.”

The top returning players for Dexter includes three solid seniors in Billy Chesbrough, Dylan Myers and Brannon Wiegers. Their leadership and play could lead the Dreadnaughts to another big season.

Dexter also has a strong group of freshmen including Jared Enciso, Nate Kniesteadt, Kevin Flaherty and Dane Wiegers.

The Dreadnaughts went 3-1-7 and finished second in the SEC White last season.

“Our goal every season is to compete with Chelsea for the SEC title and qualify for the state finals tournament,” Smothers said.

Dexter serves up a match Aug. 29 against Milan.
