Softball: Dreads show plenty of Love on Senior Night

The Dexter softball team celebrated Senior Night on May 23 with a split against visiting Saline.

The Dreads took the opener 4-2 behind an awesome showing by Kate Niswonger on the hill for the hosts. Niswonger had 12 strikeouts in a complete-game victory.

The highlight of the game came in the third inning when senior Taylor Love hit a three-run homer to knock in fellow seniors Skylar Smith and Anna Love. It was a fitting blast on Senior Night.

Smith was 2 for 3. Anna Love ripped a home run in the fifth and had an RBI and two runs scored.

The second game was an offensive showcase as the Hornets buzzed a 14-12 win over the Dreads to get the split.

Dexter scored four in the first, one in the third and fourth, three in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Saline scored five runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.

Courtney Lupi had three hits, two runs and two RBI and Kelsey Crosby had three hits. Anna Love, Megan Niswonger, Rachel Vanderroest and Taryn Damm all had two hits for the Dreads. Maebel Robeson had three RBI.

On May 26, the Dreads bounced Ann Arbor Huron 13-6 behind another strong outing from Kate Niswonger (six innings, only two earned runs).

The Dreads scored three in the first and led 4-0 after four innings. Dexter added three in the sixth and six in the seventh to break the game open.

Megan Niswonger also had a huge day at the plate going 3 for 5. Smith had three hits with two runs scored and three RBI. Damm had two hits, two runs and three RBI. Taylor Love had two hits and four RBI.

The Dreads dropped two to Clinton on May 24. Clinton won the opener 5-1 and the second game 11-1.

Dexter opens District play at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday against Pinckney at Howell.

Semifinal and final games are Saturday with games at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and the finals at 2 p.m. Howell, Brighton, Pinckney and Skyline join Dexter in the District tournament.
