Season Preview: Baseball team tan and ready to roll

The Dexter baseball team spent Spring Break where many high school kids like to go – Florida. But instead of bringing golf clubs or suntan lotion along for the ride, the Dreadnaughts loaded up the cars with bats, balls, gloves and the desire to get better on the diamond.

“We had a great time of team bonding and four-hour practices, both of which they loved,” said Dexter Coach Mike Penn.

The Dreadnaughts opened the season Wednesday, April 13 against Ann Arbor Pioneer and Penn is optimistic heading into the new year.

“Defensively we have the ability to be above average,” he said. “We have above average runners in the outfield coupled with strong arms. Grant Katcher has really stepped up and is playing hard at short. On the mound, Seth Jaimez and Micah Berlage both factor in to be our top end guys.”

Penn said earning playing time is as simple as putting bat on ball.

“For us it will be whoever hits will be the ones who play,” he said.

“We should be in the running to win the SEC White. Our District is tough with the re-districting for this year but we have a real shot to make a run at it.”

Penn said the keys to success will be pitching and defense.

“Along with timely hitting,” he added. “On-base percentage and putting pressure on opponents also will be important for us to succeed.”

Dexter went 16-13 last year and tied for first in the SEC White but lost to Tecumseh due to a tie breaker.

Top returning players include a solid core of seniors led by Cam Milne, Stewie Weber, Seth Jaimez, Chase Rojeck and Grant Katcher. Joey Hiser, RJ Lawson, Matt Sinelli are among the juniors expected to contribute this season.

Top incoming players include juniors Matt Sinelli (3B/OF) and Ryan Flattery (OF/RHP).
