Swimming: Dreads top second, third ranked teams in D2

The Dexter boys’ swimming and diving team got a first-hand look at their main competition for the state title as the top three teams in the state in Division 2 got together over the weekend. The No. 1 Dexter Dreadnaughts competed Saturday against Warren De La Salle and Birmingham Seaholm at the Seaholm High School Invitational Double Dual Meet.

Dexter knocked off both De La Salle 101-85 and Seaholm 118-68. De La Salle defeated Seaholm 115-71.

The teams are destined to see each other again in March at the state finals at Saginaw Valley State University.

The Dexter 200 medley relay team of Rob Zofchak, Ryan Stanton, Alex Janosi and Ian Russell touched third with a time of 1:41.51.


Dexter senior Matt Bergdolt won the 200 free in 1:44.39. David Merz was third in 1:47.64.

Dexter senior Rob Zofchak took first in the 200 IM in 1:52.61 with Janosi in third in 2:00.61.

Senior Jimmy Morgan took second in the 50 free in 21.99 and was third in the butterfly in 54.80.

Dexter senior Griffin Beck was third in diving (201.65 points) followed by teammate Owen Boquette (167.55).

Bergdolt was second in the 100 free in 48.57 followed by teammates Lance Freiman (third, 49.77) and Will Blodgett
(fourth, 50.09).

Janosi swam third in the 500 free with a time of 4:50.66.

Dexter’s 200 free relay team of Bergdolt, Merz, Morgan and Janosi was second with a time of 1:27.67.

Zofchak returned to the winner’s circle with a time of 50.44 in the backstroke. Alex Shehab was third in 55.35.

Senior Ryan Stanton swam third in the breaststroke (1:04.04).

The Dreads finished off the meet in winning fashion as the team of Bergdolt, Merz, Morgan and Zofchak took first in the 400 free relay in 3:10.29.
