Basketball: Boys fall to Chelsea, 37-35

Dexter is 0-1 against Chelsea this year.

That’s how coach Tim Cain sees it after his team dropped a heartbreaker, 37-35, to the Bulldogs. While his counterpart is excited to get a win over the Dreadnaughts (4-6), Cain said any notion of a streak is pointless.

“Every year is a new team,” Cain said. “To me we are oh-and-one against Chelsea. Last year, Dexter was two-and-oh against Chelsea.

“Every year is different; there’s no such thing as a streak. This isn’t the NBA.”

Cain loves the rivalry, but with the players changing on an annual basis, it’s a stretch to call anything a streak.”

The game offered few surprises as Dexter and Chelsea know each other well.

“We know each other’s sets,” Cain said. “I know he’s a first year coach, he does a good job figuring out what we wanted to do. We figured out what they wanted to do.”

Cain said two baskets below the post by Chelsea’s Trevor Kingsley got his team out of sorts.

The other was poor free throw shooting. Dexter was 6 of 13 from the line (46 percent) while Chelsea was 14 of 19 (73 percent), including six in row at the end.

Cain believed the long playoff run by the Chelsea football team prepared many of the Bulldogs for the high-pressure situation.

Dexter will now focus on Ann Arbor Pioneer next Friday and not worry so much about a rematch, Cain said.

Dexter held a 30-25 early in the final period when Chelsea switched to a 1-3-1 defense and eliminated the dump outs the Dreads has previously relied on. When that avenue was cut off, Dexter was stymied.

Dexter senior guard Grant Katcher led all scorers with 11 points. Brady Rosen added eight.

Kingsley finished with 10 points for Chelsea.
Dexter will meet Chelsea again Feb. 26.
