Hockey Preview: Dexter has nice mix of veterans, youth

The Dexter hockey team has a new coach in, Donnie Busdeker, who brings a new system for a roster with plenty of new players. But the Dreads’ success for this upcoming season will fall to the returning players from last year.

Dexter has plenty of returning talent, which should make the transition to a new coach and a new system a little smoother on the ice.

Among the top returning players include seniors Cam Milne (forward), Wes Gilbert (F), Kyle Burke (F) and Connor Harmon (defense). Junior forwards Brandon Wright and Carson Howatt also return for the Dreads.

Dexter went 10-15-1 last year and finished second in the SEC White.

Joining the team this year and looking to improve on that record from a year ago are juniors Diana Milne (F) and freshman Kyle Knapp (F), Alex Mills (F) and Luke Coogan (F).

“The players are working hard, catching on quickly to new systems and we have had really good support from the community and student body,” said Busdeker. “We need to work on new systems and a different style of game than what they were used to. We have a relatively young team that will take time to develop.”

Busdeker said the keys to success will be “working hard, developing, improving each game and practice, and accountability.”

Dexter opened the season on Nov. 18 at Grand Blanc. Read more on their 4-0 win here.
