Cross country: Dexter places 15th at D-1 state finals

The Dexter boys’ cross country team finished 15th on Saturday at the Division 1 state finals at Michigan International Speedway. The Dreadnaughts crossed the finish line with 359 points, 10 behind Bay City Western who finished a step ahead of the Dreadnaughts.

Rockford (99 points) finished first, just two points better than Northville. Novi finished a distant third with 177 points and Saline took sixth with 238 points.

The Dreadnaughts were led by Marc Lopez. The junior finished 34th overall with a time of 16:13.4. Junior Jack Shelley (41st, 16:17.4) and senior Lucas Bell (78th, 16:36.4) also cracked the top 100 for Dexter.
Sophomore Daniel Higgins finished 100th with a time of 16:49.5. Senior Gabe Thomas was 114th in 16:57.7 and sophomore Grant Sprague was 138th in 17:11.3.

In the girls’ D-1 state finals race, Dexter’s Danielle Waidley finished in 117th place. The sophomore crossed the finish line with a time of 19:39.1.

Dexter qualified for the state meet by placing their top five runners among the top 25 to win the regional last Saturday going away with 91 points at Huron Meadows Metropark.

Ann Arbor Skyline was a distant second with 106 points.

The Dreadnaughts were led by Lopez who placed 11th overall, earning all-region honors and ran a 22-second personal best. He finished with a time of 16:07.88.

Other individual scorers for the Dreadnaughts were junior Jack Shelley (17th place, 16:18); senior captain Lucas Bell (18th place, 16:21); junior Miles Kanipe (20th place, 16:24); and senior captain Gabe Thomas (25th place, 16:37). All four individuals had lifetime best times of 22 seconds, 15 seconds, 19 seconds and 19 seconds respectively.

Every Dexter runner ran a personal best time, and the team’s average time of 16:21 was 8 seconds better than any individual’s previous personal best.

The incredible Dreadnaught win streak started two weeks ago with a win at the Gabriel Richard Invitational, and then continued last week at the SEC Conference Championship – both meets hosted at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter.

The D-1 state finals race starts at 3 p.m.
