Volleyball: Dexter ups game heading into District playoffs

The Dexter volleyball team met Chelsea in the championship match of the Chelsea Tournament on Halloween Saturday.
Dexter split sets with Columbia Central in the first round of pool play 25-20, 15-25. The Dreads then beat Ypsilanti 25-11, 25-11 and Pinckney 25-13, 25-20 to finish second in the pool.

Dexter finished pool play in third place of the eight-team tournament to meet Skyline in the quarterfinals winning in two sets 25-23 and 25-13. Dexter then beat Columbia Central 25-13, 25-23 in the semifinal to advance to the championship against Chelsea.

Dexter played a tough match against top-ranked Chelsea, losing 17-25, 20-25.

Senior libero Jaime Becker led the team with 44 digs on defense for the tournament. Dexter’s offense was led by senior setter Amanda Fileccia with 84 assists.

Senior Shelby Spuller led with 37 kills for the day and freshmen Taylor Venuto contributed 32 kills for the day. Sophomore Alexa Bell had 17 kills and juniors Hannah Bohn with 14 kills and Mary Gallagher with 12 kills had great days for the Dreads.

“It was a true team effort today,” said Dexter coach D’Ann Dunn.

Dexter enters the district playoffs at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday against Ann Arbor Huron at Huron HS.
