Scio board discusses transportation millage, fire protection special assessment

A proposed transportation millage will be placed before Scio Township voters in three weeks time, which the Scio Township Board of Trustees recently discussed at their regular meeting this week.

Supervisor Spaulding Clark told the board that it’s the only issue on the November ballot and that there has been no organized opposition to it.

Voters will decide on a Transportation Millage Proposal of .36 mills on property in the Township for a period of 10 years, which would raise about $400,000 in its first year. The money would go toward expanding service from the Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority (AAATA) on Jackson Road past Zeeb west to Baker.

The AAATA will hold a meeting this evening (October 14) at 6 p.m. at the Scio Township building for anyone interested in learning more about proposed service changes.

The board voted (6-0 DeLong absent) to approve a resolution to determine the amount of the special assessment for fire protection for the 2016-17 year, and the scheduling and notice of an annual hearing to be held on November 10, 2015 to hear objections by individual property owners to the assessment.

The board determined that the estimated costs and expenses of fire protection for the fiscal year of 2016-17 shall be defrayed by a special assessment estimated at $986,485 that will be collected by a .9 mill special assessment levy on taxable properties within the Fire Protection Special Assessment District.

The board tabled taking any action on placing a parcel the Township owns at 6540 Jackson Road on the market for sale. A local realtor recently contacted the Township about it.

Clark stated, “It seems doubtful to me given its size, that this property will ever be worth much more than it is now, assuming that it can be sold in the range suggested by the realtor. I have had an inquiry from an adjacent property owner interested in purchasing the property, and it would seem appropriate to have an evaluation/appraisal of the property’s value and a discussion with the adjacent property owner before actually engaging a realtor and placing the property on the market.

The property is .522 acres of vacant land that was valued at approximately $140,000 in 2010. The property was obtained through condemnation by the Washtenaw County Road Commission when the third phase of Jackson Road was undertaken.
