Washtenaw County Road Commission lauds County Commission’s decision to levy road millage

Ann Arbor, MI- On Wednesday, September 16th, the Washtenaw County Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution to levy a one-year millage to fund road work in Washtenaw County using Public Act 283 (P.A. 283). The 0.5-mill property tax will be levied in 2015 and fund road work in 2016. This is the second consecutive year the County Commission has used P.A. 283 to fund local road improvements.

“We applaud the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners’ leadership in approving the 0.5-mill to fund county road work in 2016. While we continue to wait for a road funding package from Lansing, our local roads continue to deteriorate. The advantage of P.A. 283 is that the funds are used exclusively for road work, there are no earmarks. The millage is straight-forward and the revenue raised stays in the community,” said Roy Townsend, Managing Director of the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC).

P.A. 283 millage funds will allow the WCRC to complete an additional 29 projects in 2016, improving 58 miles of road. WCRC is responsible for projects on county and township roads. Cities and villages manage projects within their borders. You can view a complete list of 2016 projects here: http://bit.ly/1fURrSM

Last year’s P.A. 283 millage cost property owners in Washtenaw County $50 for every $100,000 in taxable property value. The average homeowner paid $35 in 2015. The millage generated $7.2 million dollars county-wide. WCRC received $4 million to fund county and township roads. Cities and villages received $3, proportional to the revenue raised in their boarders. WCRCestimates that the millage will generate the same amount this year.

The 2014 P.A. 283 millage allowed the Road Commission to complete an additional 32 county road projects in 2015, improving an extra 75 miles of road. To view a list of 2015 projects: http://bit.ly/1XKC6X4
