Field Hockey: Dreads get defensive in 1-0 win over Ladywood

The Dexter field hockey team’s offense continued to struggle but scored just enough to score a victory over visiting Livonia Ladywood on Wednesday. This was the fifth straight game Dexter has scored two goals or less.

Around 5 minutes into the game, Diana Milne took a shot towards goal which hit a Blazer stick and popped the ball straight up into the air over the Ladywood goalie’s head and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

After this goal, the game turned defensive for both teams.

Dexter controlled the remainder of the first half but could not score again.

In the second half, Ladywood began to get pressure on the Dexter goalie but the Dreadnaught defensive unit held strong. Both defensive units thwarted every remaining attack for the rest of the game.

“Our first priority was to get back in the win column,” said Dexter coach Craig Flocken. “The team was in a mini-rut and we needed to have a positive result. The second item we were looking for was for the offense to get back on track. We will take the first priority getting accomplished and continue to work on the other.”

Goalie Joy Hook had some very nice saves to earn the shutout.

“Both defensive units deserve credit for making it an exciting game to the end,” Flocken said. “Ladywood did a nice job keeping our attack minimized. Our defensive unit did a good job withstanding the second half pressure that the Blazers managed.

“Defense wins championships. We saw this last year and our current group (led by Maddy Wood, Mackenzi Wagner, Lexi Heath, Sophie Gilson and Maeve Donevan) is showing they can be just as strong no matter which three are in at any given time.”

Dexter is 5-1-1 in Division 1 and 8-1-1 overall.

“There is no panic on anybody’s part,” Flocken said. “These lulls happen and you just try to get out of them as fast as you can. Hopefully tonight was us turning the corner to getting back to where we feel we should be.”
