Tennis: Dreads ace strong showing at Crestwood tournament

Dexter traveled a long way on Saturday for a long day of tennis but the Dreadnaughts fared well against some strong competition at the 2015 Crestwood Don Zielinski Tennis Invitational in Dearborn Heights.

Divine Child took first place with 20 points, which included four first-place finishes, to edge Berkley by just two points for the gold medal.

Garden City was third with 13 points and Milan and Dexter tied for fourth with 12 points in the eight-team tournament held on a cold but dry morning and afternoon at Crestwood High School.

The Dreads had a strong showing in the singles.

Kyle Kuhns played well all day at No. 1 singles for Dexter. Kuhns beat the top players from Divine Child and Berkley to earn a spot in the championship match. He lost to Crestwood’s Jo Jo Wagner-Payne 6-3, 6-1 in the finals.

At two singles, Dexter’s Billy Chesbraugh defeated Crestwood freshman Jaron Hsu in his first match 6-3, 6-0 before losing to Divine Child’s David Metaxas 6-0, 6-1. Chesbraugh bounced back to win his next match over Milan to take third in the tournament.

Drake Rider started his day with a win over Edsel Ford at three singles. After losing to Berkley, Rider beat Garden City to take third overall.

Dexter’s four doubles team of Donovan Higgins and James Blankenship defeated Edsel Ford before falling to Garden City. But the duo came back to beat Crestwood to earn a big two points for the Dreads.
