Peace Lutheran receives go-ahead from Scio Township for church building addition

It has taken some time, but at the September 8 Scio Township Board meeting, the board gave its unanimous approval (6-0 DeLong absent) for a building addition to Peace Lutheran Church, located at 8260 Jackson Road.

The church, which was built in 1999 on 14 acres of land, now has the approval to add a two-story fellowship hall to its existing building. The addition will be about 6,000 square feet and will provide space for youth events and activities as well as classes and fellowship events and meals.

Scott McElrath from Dangerous Architects in Chelsea and Robert McFate, a builder from the McFate Group, answered questions from the board. Also present was Pastor Larry Courson from Peace Lutheran Church.

“The church sees heavy use during evenings and on Saturdays and Sundays,” said Courson. “The Dexter Co-op Preschool is using our church and will move into our new facility.”

Trustee Christine Green asked what the estimate is for additional traffic, and Courson responded that there are 16 students in a class at the co-op, and he does not expect there to be substantial additional traffic.

Trustee Jack Knowles expressed disappointment because there isn’t more of an architectural connection between the existing building and the proposed one. Both building’s entrances will be located on the north side.

The site also includes 75 parking spaces, as well as soccer and softball fields.
