Sports roundup (8-27): Volleyball, tennis teams serve up wins


The Dexter volleyball team continued its high level of play on Thursday at the Brownstown Center Volleyball Invitational.

The Dreads opened with an impressive 25-16, 25-19 victory over Country Day in pool play. Dexter was led by senior setter Amanda Fileccia (four aces, three kills and 18 assists); senior hitter Grace Wilson (six kills); senior middle Shelby Spuller (five kills); junior middle Mary Gallagher (five kills); and senior libero Jaime Becker (17 digs).

Dexter then defeated Detroit Renaissance 25-16 and 25-21. Spuller (9 kills out of 15 attempts); Gallagher (six kills); Becker (nine digs); and Wilson (eight digs) led the way.

Dexter split with Troy High School as the Dreads won 25-16 before losing 25-20. They were led by sophomore Alexa Bell with five kills, Fileccia with 16 set assists and Gallagher and Spuller with six kills each.

Finishing seventh in the 30-plus team tournament out of pool play, Dexter lost to Byron Center High School in three sets: 24-26, 25-21, 5-15.

“I was proud of the hard work the team showed (Thursday),” said Dexter coach D’Ann Dunn. “We need to work on endurance to outlast a full day tournament.”

Dexter (4-2-1) heads to Saline on Saturday for the Hornet Invitational.

The Dexter tennis team knocked off Monroe 6-2 on Wednesday as the Dreads swept the doubles matches in straight sets.
Dexter’s Drake Rider defeated Bailey Shipie 6-4, 6-2 at three singles and Dexter’s Ben Cohen defeated Josh Dale 6-0, 6-0 at four singles.

At one doubles, Dexter’s Brannon Wiegers/Matt Keogh defeated Mitchell Moore/Evan Earnest 6-2, 6-4; at two doubles, Dexter’s Steve Dootz/Dylan Myers defeated Jack Ingers/Sam Baker 6-0, 6-2; at three doubles, Dexter’s Drew Smith/Owen Boquette defeated Trey Henderson/Collin Janssens 6-0, 6-1; and at four doubles, Dexter’s Christian Vaughan/Tavan Zadeh won by default.
