Kurt Kosky stood next to the tee at Lake Erie Metropark on Tuesday and watched one of his young players swing away. “Good ball,” the Dexter varsity coach said moments after the ball bounced down the middle of the fairway.
Kosky took his varsity team to the (Carlson) Marauder Invitational for some early time on the course and for some fun in the 12-team tournament that included a mix of formats. But when the Dreadnaughts tee it up for real, Kosky expects his team to compete at a high level.
“I am very excited for this upcoming season for two reasons,” he said. “First, we have almost twice the number of girls on the team from last year. And second, with the returning players we have, we stand a very good chance to qualify for the state tournament as a team.”
Yes, the Dexter golf team should be swinging for big things in 2015.
“We have five returning letter winners from last year’s team as well as a few individuals that will push the rest of the team for playing time,” Kosky said.
Leading the way is senior Shelbea James, who finished in the top 50 in last year’s state tournament. Senior Hannah Wing and juniors Rylee Kim, Megan Keough and Claire Ward were all letter winners last year.
Junior Ashley Erickson and sophomores Courtney Palkowski, Mackenzie James and Ryleigh Bavineau are back to tee it up on varsity.
New to this year’s lineup are seniors Cayla Shlaff and Katie Tewksbury, juniors Alyssa Enciso and Ava Hermann and freshman Mack Dixon, Eliza Brown and Emma Hall.
