City Presents 2015-16 budget, earns award for previous year’s budget

City officials were recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for their presentation of the previous fiscal year’s budget passed on July 1, 2014.

This announcement was included in the first full presentation of the city’s current fiscal year budget for 2015-16 as ratified by the Dexter City Council this past June.

The GFOA sets three-person panels of qualified judges to rate entries across 21 criteria, and those that receive a “proficient” or “outstanding” rating in at least 14 criteria spanning four categories from two our of three of the judges receives the award.

City officials say they will submit this year’s budget (embedded in a PDF document at the end of this article) for consideration for next year’s judging. Dexter’s government has won this award every year since 2009.

In City Manager Courtney Nicholls’ address to mayor and council in the budget presentation’s executive summary, the current fiscal year and overall financial trajectory of Dexter are presented positively.

“The past year has been an exciting time of transition as the Village of Dexter became the City of Dexter on November 20, 2014,” she wrote. “The City continues to remain in a stable financial position, with a healthy fund balance that exceeds the recommended 15 percent of expenditures.”
