“One Artist, Many Styles: The Art of Sophie Grillet” Artist Reception

The Dexter District Library is pleased host the exhibit “One Artist, Many Styles” featuring the work of Ann Arbor resident Sophie Grillet. An artist’s reception is scheduled for Friday, May 29 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Everyone is invited to come and view the works on display and meet the artist. Light refreshments will be available and the reception will be accompanied by a jazz trio made up of award-winning upright bass player Mitesh Patel, keyboard player Avery Farmer and jazz guitarist Aidan Cotner. They are from Community High School, home of the top high school jazz program in the nation.

Grillet’s work includes painting in oils and acrylics as well as stone and clay sculpture and photography. Grillet is a British artist working in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As someone with an insatiable curiosity, she is working on a grand attempt to integrate her interests in art, social justice, emotion, ecology, science and math, but the journey has just begun. Another name for what science seeks to describe, is Nature. Her work reflects on the tragedy of our love of natural beauty and our haste to destroy it.

Grillet is a docent at the University Museum of Art. She has also worked as a cartoonist in England for books, magazines and national newspapers and was a regular contributor to The Guardian newspaper. She completed a Foundation Year at the Central School of Art in London and graduated from the University of Brighton. Grillet is very interested in physics and mathematics, which she has studied with the Open University in the England.

This exhibit is located in the Library’s lower level gallery space, will run through June 24 and is available for viewing during all Library open hours.grillet
