Dexter-Ann Arbor Run set to breeze through town this weekend

Runners from all over Southeast Michigan will head to Dexter this weekend for the Annual Dexter-Ann Arbor Run.

The annual half marathon, 10k and 5k race has been running every year and is on it’s 42nd event. About 6,000 people start their races Creekside Intermediate School and run the 13.1-mile stretch of Huron River Drive to downtown Ann Arbor. Race Director Doug Goodhue said the long-standing race is popular in part because of it’s scenery.

“It’s one of the most beautiful, most challenging courses in the state,” he said.

The race began in 1973 by the Ann Arbor Track Club, which has hosted it ever since. The club is a group of running enthusiasts started by former University of Michigan athletes looking for a group to train with.  From there the group decided to start a competitive half marathon race in the area.

As the Dexter-Ann Arbor Run grew, the Ann Arbor Track Club added a 10k, 5k and kids’ run to the race weekend. The traditional races are held Sunday and the kids’ races are held Saturday.

“It’s become a family weekend and festival of races,” Goodhue said.

Kids are invited to Ann Arbor’s Skyline High School to compete in 70-meter and 100 meter dash races, a 400-meter run, a 1-mile run and a long jump. The kids’ races begin at 4 p.m. and registration is available for $12 here.

The Dexter-Ann Arbor Run is also adding a finish line beer garden where participants can toast to their accomplishment over Wolverine State Brewing Company beer. The beer garden isn’t quite new for the storied race, however.

“We had it about ten years ago,” Goodhue said. “We decided to come back and try it. I think that it’s going to be something that the runners will really enjoy this year.”

This year’s Dexter-Ann Arbor Run will begin at 8 a.m. with the 10K race, followed up by the half marathoners at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K participants at 9 a.m.

Registration is available online until 8 p.m. Friday and can be found here.
