Dexter Farmers Market to celebrate 10 years through site improvements

The Dexter Farmers Market is looking to make a few small improvements as it moves into it’s ten-year anniversary season.

Among the improvements the market hopes to add sun screens on the eastern side of the market pavilion. The paneled screens would stretch between each of the posts and would attached with bungie chords. According to Brenda Tuscano, who works with the farmers market, the screens will provide much-needed relief and safety to vendors and patrons.

“It gets really, really hot in the middle of the summer,” she said.”

The screens would also provide some safety for pedestrians. As it’s currently set up, parking spaces on Alpine Street butt up to the edge and large vehicles often hang over the curb and into the vendors’ space. Although no one has been injured, Tuscano says the organizers want to avoid any future problems.

“If we put them up it’ll also give cars an idea of how close they can get,” she said. “Luckily we’ve never had anybody hurt. It’s just kind of one of those things we want to protect people from.”

Additionally, organizers are hoping to paint the top of the pavilion to give the market more visibility as well as add more seating for customers who want to sit down and enjoy the market.

The market has presented their plans to the Dexter City Council in order to secure funding, which hasn’t been determined yet. According to the council packet documents, the cost would come in around $2,000. The market does receive a $2,000 operating budget from the city each year, but the cost for these improvements would be above that budget. Council will make a decision on how to move forward during the coming months. View the entire presentation below.

With more than 21 vendors, the Dexter Farmers Market is looking forward to it’s tenth season.

“We’re kinda looking forward to getting it rolling here,” Tuscano said. “We had a really good season last year. Being our tenth year it’s just nice to be able to say that. The vendors have just been terrific.”

Many vendors have been selling their goods in Dexter for the past eight or more years.

We have a lot of dedicated vendors,” Tuscano said. “We have a really nice vendor family.”

That vendor family is growing this year, too. Tuscano says the market has added new vendors including a new meat vendor, produce vendor and a woman who specializes in cupcakes, pies and “cupcakes in a jar.”

To kick off the new season, the Dexter Farmers Market will be opening at 8 a.m. on May 2 with a free breakfast for patrons.

Tuscano said if anyone is interested in donating funds to help the market improve, those can be made to the city and qualify for a tax deduction. Additionally, the market is looking for volunteers to help with set up, tear down and customer assistance during the market. Contact Tuscano at 734-426-8303.
