Don’t miss Young Five and Kindergarten Information NIght — February 10th, 2015

Dexter Community Schools Kindergarten and Young Five Registration is right around the corner!

It is the time of year when the principals of Bates and Cornerstone Elementary Schools, Tim Authier and Craig McCalla, begin thinking about next fall and their newest students.

There are two requirements to enroll: age and residency.

  • Students must be five years of age on or by September 1, 2015 to register for kindergarten.
  • Students who turn five between August 1st and September 1st may register for the young five program.
  • In all instances they must live within DCS district boundaries.

The State of Michigan law MCL 380.1147 began a rolling date change for incoming kindergarten students. The bills states that for the 20152016 school year a child must be five by September 1st. There is an amendment by Senate Bill 492 which allows a parent or guardian to enroll a child who did not meet the earlier eligibility date, but who would turn five by December 1st. The parent or guardian has to notify the district in writing by filling out a waiver form. Filling out this waiver form allows the student to attend school. The parent or legal guardian retains sole discretion in determining whether to enroll the child in kindergarten or the young five program.

Dexter offers three programs:  All Day/Every Day Kindergarten, Half Day Young Five, and All Day/Every Day Young Five.

The purpose of the kindergarten program is to introduce young children to the school setting and provide a curriculum that is fully aligned to state standards. This program allows students to be taught at comfortable pace while keeping the spirit of play alive in their learning.

The young five program is a bridge between 4-year-old preschool and kindergarten.

It is designed to teach through a theme-based curriculum, focusing on developing kindergarten readiness. This program is intended for students whose birth dates would make them very young kindergarteners. Priority will be given to students who turn 5 after July 1st. Children attending this program will attend kindergarten the following fall. We will begin by offering three sections for young fives: a morning program, an afternoon program, and an all-day program. Extra sections will be added based on enrollment numbers. These sections will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 12 p.m. on April 15th.

The timeline for kindergarten and young five enrollment is:
