Annexation Ad Hoc Committee Update

January 13, 2015

Dear DCS Community,

The purpose of this communication is to serve as an update regarding the process for researching annexation of Whitmore Lake Public Schools.  The Board of Education appointed an Annexation Ad Hoc Committee in December and charged the committee to research information regarding the implications of annexation, identify known and unknown variables, identify the pros and cons of annexation, and explore other long-term options that may be beneficial to our district and students.  The committee met twice in December and once in January.  The district is committed to keeping the community informed of their progress on a regular basis.

In late December, we held an initial information session with community members to collect questions to help guide the research for the Annexation Ad Hoc Committee.  The session, along with questions submitted through the district’s Talk to Us link on the district’s homepage, generated many questions.  As we have answers to the questions, we will publish an updated FAQ document.

Our intention is to post the FAQ document on a website dedicated to keeping the community informed:

We hope to have the first FAQ document posted on the website by mid-week.  The website also has a link to submit additional questions.

Our goal is to update the community approximately every 2 weeks.  We will also host a monthly information session, with the next session to be held on January 28th at 7:30 p.m. in the Mill Creek Cafeteria.  The website will also be updated on a regular basis.

Currently, there is no formal proposal to annex Whitmore Lake Public Schools.   At this point, the committee is researching the possibility along with exploring other long-term options that may benefit our district and students.  This process will take several months extending through the spring, and possibly summer months.  The community will continue to be informed throughout the entire research process.

In closing, I would like to remind the community to be respectful when sharing your views.  I know that community pride runs deep in our schools and that this issue has aroused deep passions.  Please exhibit thoughtfulness, courtesy, and respect, and refrain from comments that could be considered disparaging of others in our community or neighboring communities.

Thank you for your continued support of Dexter Community Schools.

Christopher Timmis, Ed.D.
