Volleyball: Dreads return home, dominate SEC opponents

Welcome home Dreadnaughts.

After hitting the road for some early tournaments, the Dexter volleyball team returned home Monday for its own tournament, hosting the annual Southeastern Conference Jamboree.

And what an afternoon it was as the Dreadnaughts came within a few points of running the table. Dexter ended up 4-1 on the day and improved to 11-6 on the young season.

Dexter opened with an 11-25, 25-23, 25-10 win over Tecumseh. The Dreads were led by Mary Gallagher and Taylor Venuto (6 kills apiece); Brooklyn Brown (4 kills) and Jessica Stout (12 digs).

The Dreads lost their only match to Adrian 25-11, 19-25, 25-27. Gallagher had 4 service aces, 9 kills and 5 blocks to lead the way for the home team. Taylor Venuto had 6 kills and 8 digs; Alexa Bell had 5 kills and 14 assists; and Brown had 5 kills and 9 digs.

Dexter responded with a sweep of Ypsilanti, 25-6, 25-18. Gallagher had 5 kills; Sophie Kurcz had 5 service aces and 7 assists; and Jasmine Silvennoinen had 3 kills.

Next up was Chelsea and the Dreads were more than ready for their rival, knocking off the Bulldogs in convincing fashion, 25-7, 25-18. Venuto had 2 service aces, 7 kills, 2 blocks and 4 digs; Gallagher continued her huge afternoon with 3 service aces, 2 kills, 3 blocks and 2 digs; and Hannah Bohn delivered 3 kills.

Dexter wrapped up the day with a win over Lincoln, 25-9, 25-10. Gallagher had 2 service aces, 6 kills and 2 blocks; Venuto had 6 kills; and Brooklyn Brown had 3 service aces.
