Volleyball: Dreads bring home two wins from Saline Invite

The Dexter volleyball team played some excellent competition and along the way spiked a few games into the win column at the Saline Tournament on Saturday.

The long day started with a 25-11, 25-16 loss to South Lyon.

But the Dreads bounced back with a solid 25-17, 25-21 win over Berkley. Freshmen Taylor Venuto had six kills, Shelby Spuller and Mary Gallagher each had five kills and junior Hannah Bohn had four kills.

Dexter then lost to Bedford 25-16, 25-18. Jaime Becker had three service aces and 13 digs on defense and Alexa Bell had two service aces and two kills. Gallagher had five kills and Spuller had four kills.

Dexter opened the Silver Bracket playoffs with a 25-20, 25-11 win over Perry. Spuller had four service aces and two kills; Sophie Kurcz had three service aces, seven assists and four digs; Gallagher had two service aces, two blocks and three kills; and Taylor Venuto had two service aces, two kills and two blocks.

The Dreads then lost a tough match to Traverse City Central 15-25, 25-18, 19-21. Amanda Fileccia had two service aces and 23 assists. Courtney Fiegel had three service aces and seven digs; Grace Wilson had three kills and five digs; Spuller had nine kills; and Taylor Venuto had eight kills and eight digs.

Dexter heads into this week with a 16-19-1 record.

Dexter hosts Chelsea in the Dig Pink match on Oct. 20. This match offers many opportunities to raise money for the Sideout Foundation and Chelsea Cancer Hospital. There will be a silent auction of 20 plus great items including a piece of jewelry from Lewis Jewelers.

There will be delicious treats at the bake sale table and a photo booth.

“This is a great rival tradition that proves to raise large sums of money to fight breast cancer,” Dunn said. “We would love to see Dexter well represented at our last home match to honor our seniors on Tuesday, Oct. 20.”
