Volleyball: Dreads bounce back with strong finish in Saline

The Dexter volleyball team faced some tough competition on Saturday at the 12-team Saline Tournament and not only came out with some valuable experience that should help down the road but also volleyed a few games into the win column.

The Dreadnaughts had a tough draw playing in pool play with Monroe, Novi and Wyandotte Roosevelt.

The Dreadnaughts had only 10 kills in an opening 25-17, 25-17 loss to Monroe to open the tournament. The Dreads then lost to eventual tournament champion Novi 25-13, 25-15 in a match with just 11 kills.

Dexter got things rolling in the right direction with a rocking 26-24, 25-15 win over Wyandotte Roosevelt in which the Dreads delivered 22 kills, six service aces and only two missed serves as a team.

Sophomore Taylor Venuto led with nine kills and senior Mary Gallagher had eight kills.

After finishing third in pool play, the Dreads faced the Bears from Roosevelt again and won 25-17, 25-16 in a semifinal match.

Dexter then defeated Traverse City Central 25-16, 25-14 in the Silver bracket finals.

“We will refocus and work on improvement over the next week to prepare for Lincoln, Tecumseh, Chelsea, and Saline in the few weeks left in our 2016 season,” said Dexter Coach D’Ann Dunn.

Dexter hosts Lincoln on Thursday.
