Dexter and Chelsea have taken their longtime rivalry to another level – the highest level possible as the two volleyball programs decided to do some fighting – off the court and for a great cause.
The Dreadnaughts lost to the top-10 ranked Chelsea Bulldogs on the court in the annual Dig Pink match on Tuesday where everyone off the court is a winner.
The theme was ‘Divided we Play, United we Fight’ and the two teams raised $4,646.16 to donate to the Sideout Foundation and a portion to Chelsea Cancer Center.
“We are thrilled with our community’s involvement and generosity to raise money to fight breast cancer,” said Dexter coach D’Ann Dunn. “The Dexter volleyball parents are the best parents. Thank you to our Dig Pink committee for working endless hours to make the night a success.”
The night also was a celebration of Dexter’s six seniors.
“The night was full of so many emotions,” Dunn said. “The seniors were in elegant black dresses with beautiful Senior Sashes and sparkly pink tiaras. Parents, siblings and host families escorted the girls on the court to be celebrated by all in the gym.
The Dexter seniors are Jaime Becker, Grace Wilson, Shelby Spuller, Amanda Fileccia, Courtney Fiegel and Noora Mäenpää (exchange student from Finland who played with JV for the season).
The Bulldogs defeated the Dreads 16-25, 21-25, 22-25. Dexter was led by Spuller with 11 kills and Becker with 15 digs.
Last Thursday, Dexter volleyball traveled to Skyline for a tri-match against Lapeer and Skyline. Dexter lost to Lapeer 23-25, 23-25. Spuller had 7 kills and 9 digs and Mary Gallagher had 4 kills. Taylor Venuto contributed 3 blocks and Amanda Fileccia had 4 service aces, 16 assists, and 6 digs.
Dexter then turned right around to beat Skyline in two very close sets (25-23, 26-24). Dexter was led by Venuto with 8 kills, Gallagher with 4 kills, Madison DeLacy contributed 2 kills and 8 digs, and Sophie Kurcz with 10 assists and 14 digs.
The varsity team travels to the Chelsea Invitational on Halloween then right into the District Tournament. The first week of November is the SEC District Tournament at Huron High School. Dexter has a bye in the first round then faces Huron on Wednesday, Nov. 4.
