Three Mill Creek Middle School students placed in the 46th annual America & Me essay contest.

Belle Petit, Madison Horvath and Olivia Bergeson placed first, second and third respectively for their essays on their personal Michigan heroes. They were awarded certificates during morning announcements Feb. 27 by Farm Bureau Insurance agent Chris Monaghan, who sponsored the contest.

“Several thousand eighth graders from over four hundred Michigan schools submitted entries this year,” Monaghan said.

Petit’s essay has advanced to the state level where the top ten essays will be selected. Top ten winners will receive a plaque, a medallion and $1,000. On top of that the winners will be honored at a banquet in Lansing where they’ll meet with state governmental leaders and a Lansing Lugnuts game where they’ll be guests of honor.

The America & Me essay contest began in 1968 to encourage young Michiganders to delve deeper into American history.
