The Dexter tennis team headed to Wayne County on Saturday and brought home some silver.
Dearborn Heights Crestwood hosted the annual Don Zielinski Invitational on Saturday with doubles matches at Crestwood and Dearborn Edsel Ford hosting the singles matches.
After a long day – playing alongside great weather – Berkley finished in first place with 21 points. The Dreadnaughts had an impressive showing, netting 18 points to take second overall in the tournament. Gibraltar Carlson came in third with 13 points.
Kennedy finished fourth with 12 points while Edsel Ford was fifth, Lakeview sixth, and Crestwood and Belleville tied for seventh in the eight-team tournament.
At one singles, Edsel Ford and Berkley had a very long and close first-round match with Berkley coming out on top. Dexter’s Erin Evans and St. Claire Shores Lakeview had a great second-round match with Evans winning in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 10-7.
This set up a championship match between Berkley and Dexter and it was competitive again with Evans eventually winning 7-5, 7-5.
Berkley’s Tori Nowak took first at two singles. Edsel Ford’s Nina Quinn was third.
At three singles, Berkley’s Sarai Ware was first followed by Dexter’s Rylee Kim and Taylor Kennedy.
At four singles, Berkley’s Sari Wise was first followed by Edsel Ford’s Jennifer Tran and Carlson’s Abbie Wilkie.
The one doubles flight also was very competitive as Kennedy beat Gibraltar Carlson (Nicole Caldwell and Jenna Purvins) 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 in the championship match.
At two doubles, Berkley had a nail-biter win over Edsel Ford (Gadi Bzeih and Gaida Bzeih) in the final, with a score of 7-6, 6-7, 12-10. The Dexter team of Zoe Gaglis and Anna Stricklan was third.
Berkley took first in three doubles, defeating the Dexter team of Caytlyn McClendon and Jordyn Riechmeier.
At four doubles, the Dexter duo of Emily Herold and Lauren Flipiak took first place, defeating Berkley in the finals.
