A Startling Fact Behind Dexter’s Nativity Scene

When Firefighter Paramedic Tim Andrews messaged me asking if I would post the Dexter Area Firefighters Association’s nativity scene in Monument Park, I was immediately confused. Some church, not firefighters put up the nativity scene I assumed. I mean, it’s a religious thing after all.

Tim quickly cleared up my confusion.

Not to be confused with Dexter Fire Department, the Dexter Area Firefighters Association is a private group of former and current firefighters. Back in the early 1970’s, the Association purchased a nativity scene and have been setting it up the Saturday after Thanksgiving ever since.

Firefighters. As if putting out fires, racing to car accidents and responding to other 911 calls (not to mention rescuing a certain mountain biker after a bad crash) wasn’t enough, they’re still there working behind the scenes without sirens and flashing lights, unnoticed, unheralded, just because they believe it’s the right thing to do.

So Dexter Firefighters, from all of us in and around Dexter, thank you for being seemingly … everywhere.
