Soccer: Dreads celebrate great season with awards, honors

The Dexter girls’ soccer team ended their season with a 2-1 loss in the state semi-finals at Hope College on June 15 but that didn’t stop the greatness of the 2016 season.

Ending with an amazing 20-2-1 record on the season, the Dreads were 10-0-0 in the Southeastern Conference White Division, won their District games 4-0, 4-0 and 3-0 over Western, Chelsea and Mason respectively.

Dexter continued their dominance in Regional play by shutting out St. Joe 3-0 and beat three-time state champion Gull Lake 3-1 for the Regional title. Their dream story ended in the state semifinals with a 2-1 loss to Grand Rapids Hills Northern.

The 2016 Dreadnaughts scored 115 goals in the season and only had nine goals scored against them. With eight total games ending with the mercy rule, the Dreads shut their opponents out of 16 of their 23 games.

All Southeastern Conference White Division players were Emily Zeitunian, Hannah Tarnaski, Morgan Esch and Louisa Judge. Honorable Mention honors went to Kianna Marquez, Sammi Corcoran and Caitlin Micallef.

Zeitunian scored 64 points with 23 goals and 18 assists and was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Year. Judge had three goals and two assists totaling eight points on the season and was named Defensive Player of the Year.

Corcoran was name the Alex Forrester Passionate Player of the Year finishing with eight goals and six assists. The Coaches Award went to Marquez with her three goals and two assists, and Alex Rosevelt was awarded the SEC Sportsmanship Award.

The MVP for the season was awarded to Tarnaski after she finished with 14 goals and 17 assists.

Lucy Fuller received the Most Improved Player award and next year’s 2017 Captains will be Judge and Zeitunian.
Both Zeitunian and Tarnaski were named as First Team All-State players with Caitlin Macallef named to the Third Team. Morgan Esch and Sammi Corcoran were named to the All-State Honorable Mention Team.

In addition to the before mentioned players, Riley Doll and Louisa Judge were honored on the All-District Team.
The Dexter girls’ soccer program have accumulated 15 SEC championships, 12 District titles and four Regional championships.
