Soccer: Dreadnaughts advance to Saturday’s District Final, face Tecumseh

Story by Alex Hardie

Dexter knocked off host Adrian 3-0 Thursday in a District semifinal game to advance to the District final. The Dreadnaughts will face a strong Tecumseh team at noon on Saturday in the finals at Tecumseh.

The Maples saved their best game of the year for the Dreadnaughts as they held the Dreads scoreless until 14 minutes left in the first half.

With 14:16 on the clock, Cayden Doll took an end line pass from Daniel Higgins and buried it for the eventual game winner. It didn’t seem to faze the Maples as they continued to play solid defense and had occasional opportunities to become dangerous in the Dread half.

With the score 1-0 at the half, Adrian continued to play a solid game until Dexter’s Jake Avery played a square ball to Jaylen Bonilla who took one touch to fire it past the keeper from 22 yards out.

Now up 2-0 with 18:18 left on the clock, Dexter took more control of the game, but credit Adrian for making it difficult for the Dreads potent offense. With just over a minute in the game, Doll passed a 20-yard square ball off to Cole Harreld for the goal and the final 3-0 score.

Dexter’s Coach Scott Forrester had high praise for the Maples. “They worked hard to put pressure on every pass we made, forcing us in to some early game mistakes,” he said. “They provided us a solid tourney match that will help us play with an edge for future matches. Our defense stumbled a bit at times but became stronger as the game wore on.”

Dexter keeper Max Harreld, with backs Connor Flaherty, Dominick Burmeister, Jordan Laski and Matt Roller, combined for the team’s 18th shutout in 20 games.

Dexter won both meetings over Tecumseh this season in SEC White matches. But the Indians topped Dexter twice during the regular season last year before the Dreads knocked them out in Districts.
