The Dexter volleyball team opened the season last week at the competitive Legacy Tournament in Brighton. And while the Dreadnaughts played several solid matches, the lineup is far from SET for coach D’Ann Dunn.
Now in her fourth year – has it really been four years already – Dunn welcomes back several key players off last year’s 25-26 team that won the SEC White Division.
The Dreads lost five seniors – including Mary Gallagher, now playing for Northwood University.
Top returning players include senior setter Alexa Bell (fourth year on varsity), senior middle blocker Karli Deutscher, junior outside hitter/middle blocker Taylor Venuto (third year on varsity), and junior outside hitter Brooklyn Brown (second year on varsity).
“This is going to be a super competitive season,” said Dunn. “In the opening tournament, we split pool play sets with Saint Mary Catholic Central, then lost to Notre Dame Prep in the quarterfinals of a super competitive first tournament of the season.”
Dunn says the keys to success include hard work and dedication, both mentally and physically.
“Discipline and committed to giving a perfect effort every day and every play,” she said of what the Dreads need to do to be competitive. “We need to be good teammates, learning to trust and believe in the players on the court.”
Dexter finished second in pool play at the Legacy Tournament, winning over South Lyon East and Lutheran Northwest twice (pool play and first round of Gold bracket play). The Dreads split pool play sets with Saint Mary Catholic Central then lost to Notre Dame Prep in the quarterfinals of a super competitive first tournament of the season.
Dexter welcomes Pioneer at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 21 for the season opener. The JV game beings at 5:30 p.m.
