The Dexter boys’ tennis team has every right to use the dreaded “R” word when it comes to this season. But Coach Rob Smothers would prefer “reload” instead of “rebuild” after losing his entire singles lineup from last year’s team.
The Dreads took second place a year ago in the SEC White Division and despite the high turnover of key players, optimism is aplenty on the Dexter tennis courts.
“The hard work in the off-season of all returning players will put us in a position to compete for the SEC White title,” said Smothers.
That doesn’t sound like a team trying to rebuild.
“Our returning players’ ability to play higher positions in the lineup than last year and be successful will be a key for us this season,” Smothers said. “We have a lot of athleticism and team camaraderie. We don’t, however, have a lot of experience in doubles.”
The top returners include senior Kyle Kuhns and junior Billy Chesbrough, both team captains for 2015.
Top newcomers include senior Drake Rider and freshman Matt Keogh and Owen Boquette.
