With temps in the 70’s, Saturday was the perfect setting for Dexter’s Apple Daze.
Talking to Jim Carson, Chairperson of the Apple Daze Committee for the Dexter Lion’s Club who sponsor the event, I said, “This has to be the kind of day you imagine when you plan Apple Daze.”
“This is great!” he replied with a big smile. “People are out and having fun. It’s just the way we like to see it.”
He’s right. Looking around I could see people were enjoying themselves. Everybody is smiling as they browse the booths. Kids are ricocheting around in the bounce house. Somebody is bowling with pumpkins. Hayrides out to the Cider Mill and back, the car show, rock ‘n roll on the stage, and a variety of food added to the festival feel of it all.
But then (insert blazing electric guitar riff), the apple pie eating contest.
There was a record number of youth in this year’s contests. The rules are simple as you can imagine – bury your face in an apple pie and hit it like Tiny Tim on a Christmas ham.
Some parents coached their kids in various strategies: press straight down with your face, turn your head a little sideways to get your nose out of the way, and small quick bites that don’t have to be chewed. One enthusiastic parent if shouted “Eat it up against your belly!”
I didn’t know there were pie eating strategies.
It was all a wagon-load of fun and here are a few photos of the day’s fun.
