Sadly everybody’s chance to experience the Encore Musical Theatre’s version of “On Golden Pond” is ending this weekend, thanks to the need to start building the stage for upcoming show “South Pacific.”
“On Golden Pond” is a very touching tale about getting past the imperfections of life that I thought the Encore folks took in their own unique direction. Some people have approached me to ask if I liked the Purple Rose version better, to which my answer is “no.” I wouldn’t say one is better than the other. I’m glad I experienced both of them.
As stated in my review, I very much enjoyed the Encore’s version as I thought it was more realistic. It felt like I was sitting there looking into someone’s living room while their life unfolded before my eyes, although the lives in Ernest Thompson’s tale are bittersweet. I felt more like I was seeing the story, than being shown it – if that makes any sense.
In any event, “On Golden Pond” will run on the regular schedule until Sunday, April 26th, 2015. Tickets: Adults $32; $30 Seniors, Encore 100 Member; $28 Groups of 10 or more or Children under 17. Tickets are available here.
Artistic Director Dan Cooney commented “We knew we were heading into a tough scheduling issue when we moved up the production schedule of South Pacific. We wanted Stephen West as Emil de Beque, and to get him, we had to go with the dates that he was available. With the existing schedule of On Golden Pond, the time required for the set to be built for South Pacific just wasn’t there. We were going to be left scrambling for space to rehearse as the set build happened, it just made more sense to get that out of the way and be able to be on stage, working on the set the first day of rehearsal.”
Set build for South Pacific has been moved up to what would have been the final week of the production of On Golden Pond. Friday and Saturday, May 1-2, popular vocal group THREE MEN and a TENOR will perform on the stage of the Encore, on the newly built set of South Pacific. “The real beauty of having these guys available for their show is that it doesn’t matter what set is behind them, without any instruments, they are really flexible. The fact that they are a favorite here will help them sell their shows very quickly.”
